Sanitary Precautions at South Arbor Animal Hospital
The following precautions are being taken to keep everyone healthy at South Arbor Animal Hospital
· Examination rooms are cleaned and disinfected between each client using antibacterial/antiviral products. This includes the seating used by clients and any surface areas within the examination room. We have increased our level of sanitation based upon COVID-19.
· Hand sanitizer bottles are located within examination rooms for staff and client use to promote healthy hand hygiene.
· Our front counter and all touchable surfaces in the lobby are disinfected hourly.
· We are trying to avoid shaking hands…but old habits are hard to break. We won’t be offended if you refuse a handshake and ask that you not be offended if we don’t offer our hand.
Can Dogs or Cats be infected by the virus?
· Friday, February 28, brought news that a dog in Hong Kong was quarantined after samples obtained from its nasal cavity and mouth tested “weak positive” for the virus that causes COVID-19. The dog’s owner has tested positive for the virus (SARS-CoV-2, formerly called 2019-nCoV) and has COVID-19. The implications of a “weak positive” test result are unclear, and it’s unknown if the presence of the virus is due to infection, environmental contamination, cross-reactivity, or even potential issues with the test itself. Hong Kong officials said the dog showed no clinical signs of illness, has been quarantined and is being cared for, and will continue to be monitored and tested to determine its status.
· According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), no animals in the United States have been identified with the virus, and there is no evidence that dogs or other pets can contract or spread COVID-19.
The topic of social distancing, or reducing direct human to human contact, is common on news outlets these days and is being discussed by the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While large numbers of individuals are never collected at one time at our clinic, we do recognize that some clients, especially those at high risk of infection, might want to create some social distance between themselves and others.
- South Arbor Animal Hospital is continuing to see clients, as we always have, throughout the business day. We have not made any adjustments to our regular schedule.
- We are always willing to communicate through phone calls and email to help decide if you need to bring your pets in or not.
- We will also be more than happy to accommodate DRIVE-THRU EXAMS. This is a way for you to bring your pets to us without you having to come into the building. We can come and get your pets out of the car, do our exam in the building and then call you to communicate the plan for diagnostics and treatment. We will encourage this type of visit in to not only protect you but also our staff and those clients that have to come into the office.
- We ask that you call ahead for prescription refills. We welcome payment over the phone to limit traffic into the clinic and are happy to deliver curbside, simply just call us when you arrive.
