Senior Pet Care

Growing Older With Your Pet!

Pets, like humans, are living longer than ever before.  As our furry companions age, changes begin to take place in their bodies that can affect their overall health, well-being and comfort. Age-related diseases and chronic illnesses are part of living with an older pet.  Early diagnosis and treatment of disease is critical to your pet’s long term health. Education about senior pet behavior changes, diseases and observation can be a huge help in keeping your senior pet healthy and comfortable throughout their golden years.

With a focus on wellness and preventative care, Dr. Noel and the staff at South Arbor Animal Hospital is here to help you and your beloved pet through every life stage and to support you when your pet reaches its senior years.  Wellness care is important; many health conditions can be prevented from progressing into more serious illnesses when detected early and managed properly.

A Bi-Annual Exam Will Keep Your Senior Pet Healthier Longer

Our goal is for your pet to enjoy the longest, healthiest life together with you.  For this reason, we recommend a comprehensive exam at least every 6 months for your senior pet. We also recommend routine annual blood tests and urinalysis for our senior patients so that we can detect conditions early, when intervention is most effective.

Please call us today to schedule your pet’s senior pet exam, especially if your pet is older than 7 years old.

Because pets age more rapidly than people, dramatic changes in health can occur in as little as 3 to 6 months. If you notice any of the following signs in your pet, we recommend you schedule an appointment to have your pet evaluated:

After a comprehensive exam, Dr. Noel may recommend diagnostic tests or may prescribe medications, supplements or a special diet to improve your pet’s condition.

Behavior Consultation

Anyone who has cared for a senior pet knows that there is something extra special about them.  They seem more appreciative of their soft bed or a friendly pat on the head.  But they can also develop behavior issues that can be frightening or frustrating.  Dr. Noel offers a special service that gives owners an opportunity to have a complete assessment of their pet’s behavioral issues.  These consultations are typically an hour long and involve a thorough history, a complete exam, full blood work and a full plan for understanding and, if possible, correcting the behavior.  Please read more about this service by visiting our behavior consultation page.
